Interestingly enough, the bottom of the banana is where most people do start peeling. (Bananas grow upside down) -- http://www.yesmag.ca/brain/latest.php .

And I actually started opening bananas from the non-handle side a couple years ago. Looks cooler, and is actually pretty easy:
